i seriously wish i could! but i have no idea how to rip it from the site because the extension i usually use isn’t working (i think whatever they did to the video made that impossible?) so all i can do is screencap and wait
i’m sorry nonnie! i seriously would if i had any idea how.
(and if anyone knows how i could, just tell me and i’ll do it!)
hahaha it was just a matter of time! i loved sga and i was putting off sg1 because of how i was pretty sure i could never love another after rodney mckay, but i talked myself into it tonight :D i’m having fun so far aka sam’s being consistently awesome
oh man, PR!nonnie, you’re my favorite! welcome babe! :D you are so awesome! (and so not creepy!) no, i totally feel you on the not getting a tumblr thing. it’s sort of my entire life right now? so like, looking back on my decision to get one i have a lot of regret lol. but! it is a pleasure to have you, no matter what. please feel free to hang out in my askbox whenever :D
nonnie, you treat me so well, i am so pumped about this interview!!!!!!! dan is always so cute and humble and silly that this could only be the most adorable thing in the world.
hey nonnie! sorry, i hadn’t seen it so i had to go hunt it down and watch it first but yeah, i’m guess i’m pretty much in agreement with you? honestly, jodie deserves a soapbox for all her years in the crazy hollywood bubble and i’m glad she got one tonight, i’m glad she got to be herself and make people laugh and cry by being her usual incredible and intelligent self.
i will say that her remarks were very pointed on the idea of the idea of ‘celebrities’ and having celebrity for celebrity’s sake and i guess that line of comment may make me a little uncomfortable? judging other people’s situations like that? i mean, she was pretty dismissive of reality tv, which for some people is a plague but perhaps for those people on those shows may be doing some good? (ie. her example of honey boo boo child) or maybe not, maybe she’s right and it’s all bad stuff?
i dunno, would she judge stuff like nph and david burtka doing a spread with people with harper and gideon as violating that idea of “privacy above all?” or people who do their coming out story with some big magazine? or did she just mean those people that go out and seek attention for money? but is that so bad, if we’re willing to pay for it/watch it? i feel like she may have been better served criticizing the ~environment which perpetuates/demands all of this stuff, like coming out in public - is it the celebrity’s fault for wanting to control the flow of information with stuff like marriage/divorces/kids/etc by doing interviews/reality shows? or is it more society’s fault for demanding all that from them?
i dunno, jodie probably knows way better than i do about all of this stuff and she was just talking to her situation, which i can’t honestly fault her for in a million katrillion years. she was fantastic tonight and her speech moved me to tears. her honesty and good humor really won the night for me.
thanks for the question nonnie!
omg nonnie, you are my absolute FAVORITE
AND THANK YOU OKAY that thing looks exactly like the red power coin when it was in its little case thing
and i could definitely see some ~jason in that guy’s face so
but thank you for agreeing with me nonnie, you are the absolute best
sure thing nonnie! i wanted to do well by you so i took my time with this one.
so! the nagron fic-world is a really intensely awesome one, with some really epic writers in it. it has the tendency to learn towards WIPs rather than finished works sometimes BUT that’s okay because even if you’re like me and find WIPs to be the most painful things in all of existence, there’s still plenty to read. and if you’re not like me and read WIPs, well then, you’re good as gold. (we’re ignoring the fact that i’ve read every nagron WIP in existence because i have no willpower) i’ll rec you only finished stuff for now, if you want more, just let me know!

there are of course like a katrillion other fics i want to rec for you (esp some WIPs which are some of the best fic in fandom), but this is a good start! also feel free to check out other fics by all these authors because they are fab. also, check out the nagron library tumblr here, which keeps fairly good track of all the fic out there for nagron!
I do! And oh man, Jackson is probably my least favorite character on the whole show? Which has a lot to do with my tendency to not favor the “asshole who’s really just a tormented soul” trope or the “i’m an asshole because i was adopted” trope (ie. Loki lol no thank you.) That being said, I think Teen Wolf managed to find an interesting way of illustrating Jackson’s reaction to learning he was adopted, aka his need/drive to succeed and be better than everyone else.
That being said, I often think that storylines that feature someone realizing they were adopted while they are an adult (or young adult, whatever) are just really, really cheap ploys for drama. Adoption isn’t some torrid romance or whatever, there’s often very little need for parents to hide a child’s adoption from them in real life - the idea that parents think it would be somehow easier to lie to their children for their entire life rather than explain to them that they were adopted at a young age seems pretty fucking stupid.
Not knowing he was adopted and then finding out at like 16 or whatever is the reason we get for Jackson being such a dick, and part of me absolutely sympathizes - because I can’t imagine what that would feel like. At the same time, the Jackson we know is a ruthless, cruel human being who takes out his anger on everyone around him (he literally leaves Isaac to be abused like jesus fuck what), including those he cares about - somehow he completely rejects his parents (who are the only parents he’s ever known) and instead decides that despite loving them up until this point, all of that is erased in the face of Jackson not actually being biologically theirs. It’s really frustrating, because caring about people doesn’t work like that. It’s not an on-off switch and I wish we’d gotten more of Jackson + family dealing with the revelation of his adoption - because at least then I would have felt like there was maybe some basis for Jackson’s characterization. Instead, he gets lumped in with Loki and other asshole characters who I don’t give a shit about because, poor them, they are just ~tragically misunderstood assholes.
seriously great question nonnie, ty!
your concern is touching nonnie ;__;

oh man, that’s going back nonnie! that’s one of the first things i did on tumblr, or at least, that i can remember. i wasn’t so good at the tagging back then, but i did a quick search and found the others and dropped all 10 in the same tag, so now my girl crushes can be found in this tag here. i have to admit, some of these would definitely change if i were doing this again today - which is an idea! maybe i should do an updated list?
but thank you for being so interested nonnie, i’m glad i could entertain and that you approve :D
Awesome question! I think the dominant story is often of the couple who chooses to adopt, and they choose to adopt a baby and either succeed or fail for various reasons. I would love to see a story more focused on the actual adopted child, I would love to see an older child adoption story in particular. I know I really struggled with my adoption during like 3rd and 4th grade, in the sense that it was all I could talk about. I’ve known I was adopted for literally as long as I can remember (we have Sesame Street picture books about one of the human couples on the show adopting a baby) but for some reason, I think at that age I realized it was something different about myself and I wanted to capitalize on how it made me special and unique and also how it surprised people (and honestly how it made them a little awkward and deferential to me, I never said I was a particularly nice child.) But I’d love for a show to have a young or teenage child “deal” with adoption in ways I can relate to, ie. not being able to relate to my mom when we go shopping because she’s a tiny woman and i’m chubby, people not believing my brother “belongs” with our family because he has much darker skin than all of us. I guess I want to see an adoptive/foster family that acts like the family that they are, with moments of difficulties, just like every other family.
I think the most sensationalized idea is often this idea of either a mother keeping a child that was “promised” to a couple or a child learning later in life that they are adopted and then leaving to be reunited with their biological parents. I personally was adopted as part of a closed adoption, so there was no contact with my biological parents while I was growing up and now that I have the choice to seek them out (once you turn 18 you can) I feel very little draw to do so. Adoption isn’t all about the big drama. I’d love for there to be a story about a family with adopted kids that deals with the small difficulties for kids: ie. having to trace a biological trait through your family for science class, like blue eyes or blonde hair and not knowing what to do or say, getting told on the playground that only parents who hate their kids put them up for adoption, etc. There are tough moments for adoptive and foster families that have nothing to do with world ending, life changing drama.
That being said, I would also like more time spent with adoption stories/fostering stories that deal with voluntary fostering, aka children staying with foster families while their parents recover from whatever prevents them from being suitable legal guardians according to the state. Foster families aren’t simply interim adoptive families, they’re a different kind of family all together and I’d love for a situation like this to be depicted with all its difficulties and rewards.
Hope that helps!
[Just a note, all of this is stuff that I personally think is missing from the conversation in TV and movies about adoption - everyone’s story is different and I’m sure there are different view points on this, as I know that everyone has different needs and wants when it comes to seeing themselves represented to a wider audience.]
This is a really great question! To be perfectly honest, adoption storylines are sometimes the reason I’ve dropped shows in the past, so I can’t comment on shows currently like Glee and Once Upon a Time which I’ve stopped watching but that I know have and still do feature adoption-related storylines - only that I think they fucked up pretty badly on a bunch of fronts and I got uncomfortable and stopped watching.
My big rec is definitely Modern Family. Idyllic and sometimes unlikely, the show still navigates the difficulties and victories of adoption with real deftness and humor. Cam and Mitchell’s family with Lily is definitely one of the best parts of the show.
I’m literally going through all the shows that I know of that are featuring adoption right now or that have in the past, and either I don’t watch them or I didn’t like it. (ie. Friends, Grey’s, Army Wives, etc.) ;___; Bones had Cam adopt a teenager in season 4 and I think they handled it well, but Michelle is rarely the focus of the show. People have definitely suggested Parenthood to me for the Joel and Julia storyline, but it is a tough one as far as I can tell and also features some troublesome language (I believe the phrase “buy a baby” comes into play.)
There’s always Juno. Oh! And Sister, Sister. :D I’d go as far as to say Meet the Robinsons, but even that movie deals with troublesome orphanage/foster stereotypes. (Same with Despicable Me! We don’t have orphanages anymore Hollywood! Get with the times!)
Uh, yes. So this became more of a “don’t rec” than a “rec” list, so sorry I couldn’t be more helpful ;____; Unfortunately, movies and TV don’t really seem to get it quite right. Or I guess successful adoptions/fostering doesn’t make for good entertainment.
