why the nagron fandom bothers me
first off, what really kills me is that i was completely down for nasir and agron (i know because i just went back 30 something pages in my spartacus tag)

you know what that is? that is evidence that i was happy about this couple, i wanted them to be together, i was happy agron was happy, i thought it was great they were taking things slow and developing them like a real and new couple
but then things took a turn for the fucking worst
this is where i get really bitter and salty and start sounding like an entitled brat. nagron fans you’ve been warned.I understand your issues. I do. I have felt this way before. But I feel like what you have done here is take an entire section of the fandom, generalized us, and ripped the things we have put a lot of work into to and stomped on it. And I’m not talking about the nagron fan works either.
I will be the first one to say I am a nagron fangirl. It’s really great as a queer person to see a canon queer couple who gets to live. I like that we are seeing a biracial couple who are realistically portrayed. I like that we are seeing a gay character that, despite his history and his physical presence, is not feminized or depicted as weak. I like that we are seeing a queer couple that is not a troupe. They are flawed. They do bad things. They fight. Like real couples do. But while I have contributed a lot to this area of the fandom, it’s kind of close minded to insinuate that is my only reason for being here.
I write a number of Barca and Pietros fics. I have more in the works. I love them because their story was tragic and beautiful. I honestly feel like no one’s death has been or wIll be as tragic as theirs. My entire big bang fic is about them, about Naevia and Crixus as well. And yet you make the argurment that we( the nagron fandom) don’t care about those characters? I’m sorry but that’s more than a little insulting. Not only to me but to others, one of whom wrote an amazing bit on why these deaths were vital to the plot of the show. Hell we had a Barca appreciation week for goodness sakes.
You talk about our apprent disregard for Crixus and Naevia too. I respectfully disagree. It was someone in the nagron fandom who put together the amazing meta about Crixus being a feminist boyfriend. I myself, and several others in the nagron fandom have made multiple posts on how the show handled Naevia’s assult and what that said about her character. There is also a great meta floating around out there discussing one fan’s displeasure with Melitta and Gannicus’s relationship, feeling that it did neither of the character’s justice. There are tons of posts about feminist characters including Saxa, Mira, Sura, Aurelia, and Diona. Many of them composed by nagron fans.
It was the nagron family who created a following for characters like Duro, Auctus, and Donar. And you’re really insinuating we want nothing to do with anyone but Nasir and Agron? Your post was rather insulting because, at the end of the day, there is a group of us that are contributing more to the fandom than some others. And that’s fine. Fandoms are supposed to be fun. There is no minimum or maximum time requirement. You should do as much or as little you like. But because we call ourselves Nagron fans, it is assumed that all the time we put into this fandom is based solely on that one ship, which often times it’s not. It is really frustrating and frankly infuriating is the fact that you take some of the things many of us have contributed and use them as evidence demonstrate how we’ve “ruined the fandom” but you fail to even acknowledge that many of us, myself included, have contributed a load of stuff to the areas of the fandom you say are getting totally over looked. And even for people who contribute mostly to that aspect of the fandom, it’s really kind of shitty to tell them that all the time and energy they are pouring into something( look at amazing artists like Steorie and crazzzedope), simply because you don’t like the hype.
I can’t even tell you how many social commentaries I have seen and how many deep, critical discussions I have entered into with people in this fandom. You talk about nasir and Agron fans as if every single one of us is a mindless fangirl in it for the gay porn. Again I respectfully disagree. Check out some of the things that gaygreekgladitor has to say about the fetishization of gay men in fan culture. We nagron fans aren’t just sitting here drooling on ourselves, talk about rape culture, victim blaming, race, feminism, sexuality, historical context, masculinity, consent. We are not all mindless fangirls. (not that there is anything wrong with that.)
And beyond that, while I understand your frustration and I think you have a right to voice your opinion, you don’t get to judge or downplay how people come into a fandom. I started watching Spartacus because I studied history and I love historic epics. And that’s great. But some people honestly couldn’t give a rat’s ass about history. And yet here they are watching and enjoying a show that is history based. How people came into things shouldn’t matter. We should be a cohesive group who can enjoy this thing we love together. Instead we point fingers at who’s not doing it right. It’s like saying people aren’t real fans of something because they didn’t read the book first. That’s none of my business or anyone else’s. People like what they like how they like it. There is a natural human inclination to be bothered when people don’t love the things we do in the way we do. However, that does not give you the right to tell a group of us that we are ‘ruining the fandom’ when you only acknowledge the contributions we have made to aspect of the fandom that you don’t like.
I see where you are coming from and I respect your opinion. However, I do not agree with the accusation that people like myself, who put a lot of time and effort into the work and discussions we provide, are being accused of ruining a fandom we have tried to expand through discussions and works. It’s elitist, it’s unfair, and it’s how fandom wars get started. So maybe you should do a little more research before you bring the hammer down on us.
I’m not comfortable with the idea that a performer knowing how to apply stage makeup on himself somehow makes him gay. Just saying.

There’s a difference between bravery and integrity, and just because Snape gave his life for the ONE thing that mattered to him doesn’t mean that he didn’t treat everyone and everything else like complete shit because he IS a piece of shit. In an incredible and compelling way. But a dick nonetheless.
And don’t get me started on how Harry gives the name of the man who ruthlessly tormented him for 6 years to his son. I’ll just blame Ginny.
I LOVE Snape’s character for what it is. But I just don’t get the pedestal that fandom puts him on. It’s just WRONG.
